What to do when your writing dries up
When your Soul calls you to new lands - a new language may be required
In 2011 I started drawing when I’d never drawn before. I wanted a way to communicate with more immediacy and less effort. Writing was becoming tedious and sloggy. Drawing used a different part of my brain, and although I didn’t know it at the time, I was opening to become a channel and a few steps closer to owning my ability to speak to the dead - people and animals.
I noticed when doing memorial portraits; I became aware of the person or pet’s presence. I very carefully tip-toed around that and called it “tuning in” and never said the word - dead or medium or even psychic, but that’s a story for the book I’m now working on.
I went wordless while drawing.
Even though I published another book during these years - words just haven’t flowed, and my ability to sit and write has been like swimming through concrete.
So what to do?
I’m not sure what the answer is for you, and to be clear, this is not writer’s block. I was conscious that I’d taken a detour from the ease of writing, and I honestly didn’t know if or when I might get back on the main road.
My suggestion? Don’t force it. Ask your deep-down body what it wants to say and how it wants to say it.
Ask your marrow if it would like to dance.
Ask your throat and lungs if they’d like to speak. (my podcast has been a lifesaver!)
Maybe your hands want to fingerpaint, sculpt, or crochet your stories and emotions.
When words are our primary language, we must explore other ways to speak if we want to grow.
When we want to walk in other realms and communicate with other dimensions - we must learn to speak the language.
If your Soul’s calling shows up as one door closing - reach out and open another one!
I work on things in cycles and always have multiple projects going on from photography, painting, knitting and writing.
