I was recently in a conversation with two women I deeply respect. We were talking about housing, parents, and what to do with what we are left with as their lives wrap up or have wrapped up.
I saw an image of a recent episode of Hoarders showing sections of the front yard lined up in Keep, Trash, and Give Away. It occurred to me that this is what so many of us need to do, especially if we’ve recovered from traumatic childhoods.
It helps us start sifting through our emotional and behavioral inheritances, an inventory of the values, schemas, and knee-jerk reactions passed down to us.
We can reflect and make lists of…
What has value?
What is garbage?
What do we want to donate to our children and the world around us?
When we do an energetic inventory, we become more conscious of what’s ours, what belongs to our mothers, and what belongs to our fathers. When we are aware, we can make conscious choices of what to keep, what to toss, and what to donate.
This can look like…
Keep:
Artistic talent and creativity on steroids.
The ability to make beauty from garbage.
A deep acceptance of world religions and pathways for spirituality.
A DNA gift that means at 57, I have like 7 gray hairs.
Toss:
Paranoia. & arrogance.
Victim-mentality.
Hoarding.
Substance abuse.
Donate: [the things I talk about are passing knowledge and values forward to my descendants and the public]
Love of spiritual and personal growth.
Curiosity about everything and everyone.
Love of travel and learning about other cultures.
A deep-down belief that every voice matters.
Advocating for freedom to choose.
Advocating for authentic self-expression.
The importance of radical honesty toward self and others.
And you?
What’s in your keep, toss, and donate piles? I’d love to know if you want to share them in the comments. [See? Endless curiosity!]
XO,
LMW
